New Delhi: It is not common that Prime Minister of a country tweets about municipal elections. Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked citizens of Delhi by posting on Tweeter his personal thanks to Delhi for electing the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) back in power in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi(MCD) polls. This shows that these civic elections were not about local issues. In fact, it was being seen a referendum of BJP policies in the Capital.
The BJP defeated the Aam Aadmi Party badly. The BJP, incumbent for ten years in the MCD, snatched 184 out of the total 272 wards, upping its strength from previously held 138.
AAP,the ruling party in Delhi, meanwhile, won 46 wards and the Congress 30. Political observers feel that these elections were never about work done in the city of Delhi by either the MCD or the AAP-led Delhi government. It was part of the larger political hype sweeping the country, where the AAP had been branded the loser and BJP as the winner.
The AAP lost its narrative in these elections because of infighting, tough fight by Swaraj India, over emphasis on EVM manipulation issue and lack of projection of its good work done in Delhi.
The EVM issue backfired as most of the voters surveyed by our reporters were not convinced with logic given by AAP. Some even claimed that AAP had got unexpected majority in Delhi Assembly election with help of same EVM machines.
The good work of the AAP-led government in many fields like health —as it started mohalla clinics, expanded the capacity of government hospitals and made health care better in Delhi. It also did excellent work in field of education .It took many initiatives and allocated larger budget for education. This initiative gained sufficient recognition, as many international journals wrote about the mohalla clinics.
